CODE OF CONDUCT

The mission of the Smoke Ventilation Installers Association (SVIA) is to elevate life safety in

South Africa’s built environment by establishing, promoting, and enforcing the highest

standards of quality, compliance, and maintenance in smoke ventilation contracting

Technical Compliance & Standards

Mandatory SANS Adherence

Systems must be designed and installed in strict

compliance with National Building Regulations, SANS 10400-T, and regional municipal

bylaws

Certified Components Only

Members must exclusively use fire-rated equipment that

has passed legal testing requirements and holds accredited certification

Accurate Handover Documentation

Contractors must issue clear, untampered

Certificates of Compliance (CoC) and system designs upon project completion

Quality of Workmanship & Safety

Skilled Labour Force

Installation and engineering teams must be fully trained,

competent, and properly supervised on-site

On-Site Safety Protocols

Contractors must adhere strictly to the Occupational Health

and Safety (OHS) Act regulations

Zero Technical Shortcuts

No member shall alter approved engineering designs or use

substandard materials to cut costs

Life Safety Maintenance Lifecycle

Client Education Obligations

Members must formally notify building owners of their

legal obligation to maintain smoke ventilation equipment

Rigorous Testing Standards

Maintenance inspections must test equipment under true

operational conditions, including secondary power failure states

Transparent Fault Reporting

Any system defects or non-compliant structural

alterations found during service must be formally documented for the client

Professional Conduct & Business Ethics

Fair Competition Practices

Members must compete ethically and avoid deceptive

marketing or malicious disparagement of fellow association partners

Conflict Resolution Procedures

Trade disputes or client complaints must be

submitted to the SVIA committee for mediation before legal action

Anti-Bribery & Corruption

Members must reject collusion, price-fixing, or illicit

payouts aimed at securing tenders or falsifying compliance certificates
